Make Every Stumbling Block as a Stepping Stone!

Lord Nelson, one of the Britain’s greatest naval commander encouraged his soldiers to fight for a great victory. In the battlefield one of his soldiers approached him and told him that the edge of his sword was broken.Nelson replied him thus: “Then take a step forward and fight.”In a battle, no explanation is required. Only action is required. For that courage is needed. In fact life is also a battlefield. We have to overcome many difficulties and stumbling blocks.

Make every stumbling block as a stepping stone. Then victory is yours.Once a mother was walking along with his small boy on a ground. Suddenly the boy fell down. Helplessly he looked his mother. She was standing still watching her son. The son slowly stood up rubbing his hands. The mother asked him to show his hands. It was empty. She told him,” My dear son, you could have taken at least some sand in your hand. You have to gain something in every fall”. The mother’s training worked. Needless to say that the son shaped himself and became a great hero.

The Jewish proverb rightly says, “When you have no choice, mobilize the spirit of courage”.“Success is never final and failure is never fatal. It is courage that counts” so said George F. Tilton.Thomas Alva Edison’s mother instilled in him values such as love, sacrifice and bravery. Once at the Grand Trunk Railroad he saved a three year old child from a runaway boxcar. The child’s father Mackenzie, who was a station Agent was very much pleased and in gratitude he taught Edison telegraphy. Edison’s courage paid him handsomely. He worked hard and as he advanced in years he went on from one success to another. He became the greatest inventor.

Napoleon Bonaparte rightly said that, ‘courage is not having the strength to go on – it is going on when you don’t have strength’.Mahatma Gandhi stood like a rock against the mighty British Empire with  non-violence as his only weapon. Churchill remarked, “I could defeat him if he comes with some weapon. But he is strange. He has no weapon. Then how could I fight him?”The mighty British Empire was not able to face one single weaponless small figure. Such was his courage.

Mistakes and failures are common in everybody’s life. We have to analyze our mistakes. And we have to learn a lesson from every failure and the mistakes are not to be repeated.Think deeply. Plan correctly. Act fast.  Then success is yours. With courage even the space could be conquered. As the great poet Robert Browning rightly said,” Ah! But a man’s reach should exceed his grasp, Or what’s heaven for?

Business is Business and How to win the game

The nature of the world is to find fault with everybody. You have to bear these comments and you have to sail smooth against the rough waves.

Be it a manager, or a CEO, or a club president, nobody could satisfy all.

If he begins on time,                               He is a tyrant

If he waits for late-comers                     He is too tolerant

If he requires constant attention          He is a despot

If he does not care                                   He makes himself foolish

If he assumes the spokesman’ role      He becomes a bore

If he yields                                                 He becomes unnecessary

If he calls for silence                                it is an abuse of power

If he permits disorder                             He falls in authority

If he is firm                                                He takes himself too seriously

If he is good-natured                               He does not maintain his rank

If he expounds his own ideas                People are perforce against him

If he asks for a choice                              He is irresolute

If he is dynamic                                        He is worked up

If he remains cautious                             He is inefficient

If he does everything on his own          He is conceited

If he delegates                                           He is lazy

If he is attentive to the ladies                 He is obsequious

If he is not                                                  He is a snob!!!

I.P.Guillon, Rotary Club of Marmande, France has written the above  under the caption The Club President  in French.. This has been translated in English by Wallace Flint, Rotary Club of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, U.S.A  The Rotary Club magazine ‘The Rotarian’ has published it in its July 1982 issue.
Well, let us formulate and plan our own good principles and action plan to achieve our goal.

What is business? There is an internet joke as to how one should win the game of business.

Father:  I want you to marry a girl of my choice

Son   : I will choose my own bride

Father: But the girl is Bill Gates’ daughter

Son    : Well in that case…. OK

Next father approaches Bill Gates.

Father: I have a husband for your daughter

Bill Gates : But my daughter is too young to marry!

Father: But this young man is a vice – president of World Bank

Bill Gates: Ah! In that  case… Ok

Finally father goes to see the president of the World Bank.

Father : I have a young man to be recommended as a vice-president

President : But I already have more vice-presidents than I need!

Father : But this young man is Bill Gates’s son-in-law.

President : Ah! In that case… OK

This is how good business is done.

Manipulate intelligently supply and demand and win the game without harming anybody but to the satisfaction of all concerned.

Keep the secret in your heart and start playing.

GOOD LUCK!

Power of Words-Use it to Make You or Mar You

There is an interesting story in the Puranas (Hindu sacred scriptures) about Kumbhakarna, the brother of Ravana, the Rakshasa (Demon) King. Ravana and his brothers performed penance in the forest on one foot for a thousand years. But, the Creator of the Universe, God Brahma did not appear. He continued his penance along with others without eating any food for another thousand years. Even after that, Brahma did not appear. Ravana cut off his ten heads and made offerings of them to Brahama. Then Brahma appeared. Brahma restored his heads to Ravana and granted the boon that he would not be killed by anybody but a man. Kumbhakarna too got a boon. Kumbhakarna wanted NIRDEVATWAM (absence of all Gods or Deities). But by a slip of his tongue (caused by Saraswathi, the Goddess of Knowledge) what he asked for was NIDRAVATVAM (sleep).Brahma granted him sleep. He told him that he would sleep for six months and then wake up and be active for the other six months in a year.

Because of one wrong word, Kumbhakarna’s lifestyle was changed completely. Like Kumbhakarna we too select wrong words at the right time with the result we change our lifestyle completely. Success will shy and move away from those persons who do not know to use the correct words at the right moment.

A word can make you or mar you. While others gamble with money, you may play with your beautiful words and get success. Be a monarch and merchant of words to make your life a successful one. Words are to be selected carefully. Words are to be arranged carefully in the order of its preference too.Professor Ernest Brennecke of Columbia has constructed a sentence. If you change the place of the word ‘only’ in that sentence you will get a different meaning!

I hit him in the eye yesterday. Now you change the word ‘only’ and see what happens!

Only I hit him in the eye yesterday.

I only hit him in the eye yesterday.

I hit only him in the eye yesterday.

I hit him only in the eye yesterday.

I hit him in the only eye yesterday.

I hit him in the eye only yesterday.

I hit him in the eye yesterday only.

You are now getting different meanings by simply altering one word, ‘only’.

The meanings are baffling.Hence words are our capital. If we use properly we will be rewarded. Thousands of years of darkness in a room will be dispelled by lighting a lamp. Small sparks created by rubbing a stone with one another dispel thousands of year’s darkness in a moment. Similarly by rubbing suitable words with one another you can create joy, knowledge, wealth, health and what not.

Lord Krishna, in Bhagavat Gita has described the austerity of speech. ‘Anudvegakara’, satyam, priyam, hitam- these four are to be followed while uttering any word. The meanings of these Sanskrit words are given below.Words which cause no annoyance to others and are absolutely untainted by calumny and slander are called anudvegakara. Truthful words are called saytam.

Loving, sweet, artless and gentle words which are pleasing to hear and are altogether free from acerbity, pungency, coldness, sarcasm, insolence and other faults are known as ‘priyam’.Words which are ultimately beneficial to all, which are altogether free from violence malice, jealousy and animosity, and are full of love, compassion and good wishes are called ‘Hita’. If we use the words correctly the world will be ours. Words bestow health, wealth and all round success.

In Praise of ‘If’ –  S.Nagarajan

Haveyou ever read the inspirational, motivational poem written by Nobel Laureate Rudyard Kipling?

Do you want to know who can be called as a Leader, a Man? At the time of depression, do you want to know how to react to the events? After spending quite a number of years, with all your energy, suddenly a failure occurs, for no fault of yours. You may be a victim of the circumstances. How the entire worlds evaluate you at that particular moment? Where are your friends at that fateful moment?

Whoever shared your wealth, are they supporting you at your adversity? What to do, then? Do you know what you should do at the time of failure? For many more such questions, you may find the right answers in – ‘If’ if you have not read the beautiful poem, for your ready reference, it is given below:

If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,

If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,But make allowance for their doubting too;

If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,Or, being lied about, don’t deal in lies,Or, being hated, don’t give way to hating,

And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise.If you can dream – and not make dreams your master

If you can think – and not make thoughts your aim If you can meet with triumph and disaster

And treat those two imposters just the same. If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken

Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,Or watch the things you gave your life to broken,

And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools. If you can make one heap of all your winnings

And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,And lose, and start again at your beginnings

And never breath a word about your loss.If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew

To serve your turn long after they are gone,And so hold on when there is nothing in you

Except the Will which says to them: “Hold on”. If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,

Or walk with kings – nor lose the common touch. If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you.

If all men count with you, but none too much.If you can fill the unforgiving minute

With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run –Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,

And – which is more – you’ll be a Man my son!

Rudyard Kipling turneddown many honours offered to him including a knighthood, Poet Laureate and the Order of Merit, but in 1907 he accepted the Nobel Prize for Literature. And he is ever remembered for his poem ‘If’.

Now contemplate on the mottos of your life. You can carry a copy of the poem in your wallet or you can copy it in the first page of your personal diary so that whenever you are depressed you can read it. More so whenever you have leisure you can read and memorize it.A boy fell on the ground while he was playing. He looked at his mom painfully. She cheerfully said to his son, “Rise my boy, with a handful of sand. Gain something whenever you fall!” The boy understood the lesson.Failure is not a failure till you accept it and quit the ground. Every fall is to rise again with some gain!

The One Word That Makes the Difference Between Success and Failure!

The difference between Success and Failure is determined by just one MAGIC WORD! Yes, just by one word! What is that?

Walter Chrysler, when asked to give the secret of success, listed the various qualities, such as ability, capacity, energy, but added that the real secret was enthusiasm.“Yes, more than enthusiasm,” said Chrysler, “I would say excitement; I like to see men get excited.”In the great epic Ramayana, Maharishi Valmiki is giving an interesting picture. When Hanuman, the monkey God was not able to trace out the location of Sita, He was very much distressed.

He lamented, “How could I meet my colleagues at the other end of the ocean without finding out Sita!”As He is the embodiment of Success, He immediately found out the required quality and uttered two verses (12th chapter verses 10 and 11).In Sundara Kandam, the best part of Ramayana, He says, “Enthusiasm is the cause for getting wealth; enthusiasm is the greatest comfort; Enthusiasm makes one to do his best always, in all matters. Enthusiasm makes human effort fruitful. Hence I am going to do my best induced by enthusiasm.” Needless to say, Hanuman found Sita in Asokavanam. This is the turning point in the great epic. Rama went to Lanka and killed Ravana. Norman Vincent Peale has written a book titled, “Enthusiasm Makes the Difference”.

He points out that

Enthusiasm never runs down

Enthusiasm cancels fear and worry

Enthusiasm reduces stress and tension

Enthusiasm works miracles in problems

Enthusiasm is a powerful motivation which makes things happen

Enthusiasm builds power under your difficulties

Enthusiasm makes the difference- it leads everybody from failure to success.

The word enthusiasm from the Greek entheos means ‘God in you’ or ‘full of God’. In other words enthusiasm is a “Godly Quality”.

Emerson wrote: ”Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.” God helps to those who work with great enthusiasm. So instead of blaming others or the environment, we have to work hard enthusiastically aiming at our goal.

This one word will definitely take us to success from failure!

It is one of the practical virtues of civilization.Do not criticize; if necessary, then do not add emotion. Remember unjust criticism is often a disguised compliment. Remember that no one kicks a dead dog. Marcus Aurelius said – “Dig within”. There lies the well–spring of good. Ever dig and it will ever flow!
